This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. We aim to cover all subjects and languages. There are now 5047 journals in the directory. Currently 2081 journals are searchable at article level. As of today 397170 articles are included in the DOAJ service.

Frantext consists of approximately 4000 full text pieces in French, covering 5 centuries (the 16th through the 20th). Eighty percent are literary or art works and 20 percent are scientific or technical writings. There is a searchable bibliographic database.

In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. ILEJ, the "Internet Library of Early Journals" was a joint project by the Universities of Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Oxford, conducted under the auspices of the eLib (Electronic Libraries) Programme. It aimed to digitise substantial runs of 18th and 19th century journals, and make these images available on the Internet, together with their associated bibliographic data. The project finished in 1999, and no additional material will be added. See Final Report for conclusions of the project.

The Bookshelf is a searchable collection of online biomedical textbooks and other literature. In addition to some classic biology and medical textbooks and monographs, it also includes books and databases produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The Bookshelf is one of the many databases that make up Entrez, NCBI’s powerful search and retrieval system.

Victorian Women Writers Project The goal of the Victorian Women Writers Project is to produce highly accurate transcriptions of works by British women writers of the 19th century, encoded using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The works, selected with the assistance of the Advisory Board, will include anthologies, novels, political pamphlets, religious tracts, children's books, and volumes of poetry and verse drama. Considerable attention will be given to the accuracy and completeness of the texts, and to accurate bibliographical descriptions of them.
